Cinda Jones Receives 2007 Award for Outstanding Achievements in Sustainable Forestry from BASF

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, November 6, 2007 - Cinda Jones of Cowls Tree Farms, based in North Amherst, Massachusetts, recently received the 2007 Outstanding Achievements in Sustainable Forestry Award, which is given annually by BASF Professional Vegetation Management (ProVM) and the American Forest Foundation.

"The sustainable forestry award recognizes the achievement of those who have dedicated their daily lives to promoting and assuring sustainable forestland management," said BASF representative Michelle Isenberg, who presented the award to Jones on Oct. 11 during the American Tree Farm System  national conference in Madison, Wisconsin. "Cinda Jones has demonstrated her commitment to sustainable forest management through political activity, industry leadership and conservation efforts in her dedication to educate others by developing a public learning center at her family's sawmill."

After Jones, a ninth-generation co-owner/operator, returned to help run the family tree farm, Cowls became recognized as a national leader in natural resource politics, public education, wildlife habitat improvement and sustainable forestry. Most recently, Jones' leadership has been the driving force behind the success of the American Woodcock Initiative.

The project creates forest habitat to benefit the woodcock population and other wildlife species throughout Southern New England.
Larry Wiseman, president and CEO of the American Forest Foundation, praised Jones for being a vocal advocate for protecting forests. "Cinda has testified before Congress, published articles and organized coalitions to advance the long-term stewardship of family-owned forests,Ó Wiseman said. "Cowls Tree Farms is a leader in certification and conservation, as well as a public voice for wildlife, conservation and sustainable forestry."

"Sustainable forestry is not a short-term goal for me," said Jones. "Improving the land and passing it on to future generations of my family is what sustainable land management is all about. I appreciate everything BASF and the American Forest Foundation do to help encourage sustainable forestry."
