SAWMILL / PLANER / TIMBER SIZER

Sawmill planing, grading, timber, lumber, post & beam

S A W M I L L

After  the logs are brought into the mill and scaled, or measured, they are taken to the sawmill. The first  step is the debarker. A set of spinning knives runs over the log and removes the bark. This step not only provides the landscaping companies a nice mulch, but it increases production in several ways. After the  tree is cut down in the woods, the bark traps a lot  of dirt, rocks, and other debris. Removing the bark keeps the main saw blade sharp much longer. Debarking  also gives the sawyer a better view of the log, allowing him to make more accurate cutting decisions. The main  saw cuts the log into boards and/or timbers, depending on the size and grade of the log. The boards are then  trimmed down to width, graded, and stacked. Some of  the lumber is sold "green" or still wet. The rest is either stacked for air drying or sent out to be kiln dried.

Our  Newman M-68 Planer is used to surface dry, rough, lumber into any of dozens of patterns, from Tongue and V-Groove, to Shiplap, to Edge and Center Bead.  We manufacture many hard to find patterns like Log Cabin Siding and Wide Pine Tongue and Groove Flooring. The majority of the lumber that goes through the planer  is S4S, or surfaced four sides.

Our  newest acquisition is a rebuilt Stetson-Ross timber sizer. This planer was designed to surface large timbers for Post and Beam construction. It can plane all four  sides of a 16" x 24" x unlimited length timber in one pass. It was manufactured in the 1920's and rebuilt  for our use in 1999. We have always been able to provide  rough sawn Post and Beam timbers, and now we can plane these timbers for a finished appearance.
